Frequently Asked Questions

  • ASIST is designed for anyone aged 16 and older who wants to build the skills and confidence to support someone thinking about suicide.

You do not need a professional background to attend. In fact, research shows that most people who experience suicidal thoughts reach out first to family, friends, coworkers or someone they trust in their community – not to a clinician or crisis service.

With more than 700,000 people dying by suicide each year worldwide, we need a broad, community-wide response. Evidence indicates that while many of us truly want to help, we often feel unsure about what to say or how to intervene in a way that reduces risk and increases safety.

That’s why LivingWorks has spent over 40 years developing and refining LivingWorks ASIST:
to equip people across every part of a community – workplaces, schools, faith groups, frontline services, sports teams, volunteer organisations and everyday settings – with  practical, proven suicide intervention skills.

    ASIST is for you if:

    • You want to feel prepared to recognise when someone may be thinking about suicide.

    • You want practical guidance on how to have a supportive conversation.

    • You want to learn how to help someone move toward safety, hope and connection.

    • You are part of a community, organizstion or family that values mental health and wellbeing.

Whether you're a teacher, coach, manager, service provider, parent, peer or community member, ASIST gives you the tools to make a life-saving difference.

  • No. ASIST is delivered strictly face-to-face. The program is designed to teach complex, practice-based intervention skills that rely on real-time interaction, role play, observation and coached practice. These elements are essential for building confidence and competence in having difficult, high-stakes conversations about suicide – something that cannot be replicated effectively in a digital or virtual environment.

  • A three-year certification period aligns with industry standards and best practices. Research shows that skills begin to fade within the first year and continue to decline over time. Renewing every three years helps ensure trained Helpers refresh their knowledge and skills, maintain confidence and stay current with advances in suicide prevention training.
